Piteå, located on the Gulf of Bothnia, is a prominent municipality in northern Sweden. Its strategic positioning, 900 km north of Stockholm and just 100 km shy of the Arctic Circle, makes it a vital contributor to the County of Norrbotten, boasting a population of 260,000.
Piteå focuses on energy and sustainable development, offering promising prospects for both individuals and businesses alike. In recent years, the municipality has diversified its industrial landscape, transitioning from a reliance on basic industries to fostering a service sector.
Education stands as a central pillar of Piteå’s development strategy, with the municipality’s education office overseeing preschool and school activities catering to approximately 8,000 children and pupils. Quality in the schools and pre-schools is a prioritized issue in the municipality and for the last years Piteå has been at the top when the teacher union has chosen “Best school municipality of the year”.
The education department has its own research unit and a strong cooperation with Luleå University of Technology (LTU).
The preschools in Piteå are in constant development to raise the quality of teaching, that teachers become more skilled in different areas of knowledge such as, the subject didactic knowledge, including science, technology and mathematics, but also investments to provide the best opportunity for the children to strengthen linguistic competences and communication.
In this project Bergsvikens preschool will be the main participant. Situated 7 km south of Piteå’s center, Bergsviken has about 170 children and a total of 40 pre-schoolteachers. Bergsviken is a homogeneous area with some influences from other cultures. This project will also include two other preschool areas, Hortlax preschools, which are situated in a neighborhood close to Bergsviken; and Piteå Central.
